Does Critical Mass block traffic?

Think of Critical Mass as rush hour for cycles. To say we’re blocking traffic is missing the point—we are the traffic!

For no more than an hour or so each month, we have the chance to demonstrate that the infrastructure for cycling in Derby is woefully inadequate. If a few dozen cyclists cause unacceptable delays to motor vehicles, that says more about the lack of dedicated cycle routes than the cyclists themselves.

What about red lights and zebra crossings?

Participants are expected to obey all the usual traffic laws, which means the group stops at red lights and pedestrian crossings.

The goal is to move as one contiguous group. Riders towards the back should follow close behind those in front even once the light has changed to red, much like the tail end of a lorry or bus.

At busy junctions, experienced riders may spontaneously volunteer to “cork” the turn. This means they stand on the outside of the lane while the rest of the group rolls through, preventing motorists from cutting into the group.

Without these important techniques, the group could become fragmented and lose its strength in numbers. If the group does get split up then the riders at the front should take the next safe opportunity to wait for those who got left behind.

Who organises/funds these events?

Critical Mass Derby is not organised or funded by anyone in particular. The project cannot accept funding or monetary donations.

This website—criticalmassderby.org.uk—exists only to provide information about the event and to serve as a point of contact for questions and feedback about the rides.

Is Critical Mass a protest?

Critical Mass is a spontaneous gathering and a celebration of cycling. It is a peaceful, lawful and relaxed cycle ride where everyone is welcome.

Think of it as an unorganised coincidence of people simply riding their bicycles in the same direction for a while—a party on two wheels. Oh, and there’s music too!

Is Critical Mass religious?

Not that kind of Mass!

The event itself is entirely neutral—neither religious nor non-religious. People of all faiths and cultural backgrounds are welcome at Critical Mass.

How long are the rides?

The rides generally last about an hour and cover about 8–10 miles. Of course, anyone is free to come and go as they please. We generally park our bikes and gather at the pub when the ride is over.

Is it fun?
